Sue's Blog

The best and worst of being retired….

  • going back to bed with a cup of tea when everyone else has gone to work
  • time to spend with my family
  • catching up with old friends
  • no more stressful Sundays writing lesson plans
  • missing my work colleagues
  • time to shop …..
  • less money to spend
  • time to write lists ????

Our new computer

yellow computer

Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!! at last I can communicate with you all out there; we have a phone and we have wireless broadband and now we have a computer. So in theory my retirement blog can begin in earnest. Though for the next couple of months this will be very trial and error and probably lead to Omar going grey (prematurely) because every 5 minutes its “Om” ???????? So hopefully by the time we reach Mauritius I will be able to drive this computer on my own…………….

pause for thought…

“The sounds are different. There’s the sound someone having to firmly shut the front door so it doesn’t pop open. Voices as they pass the bottom of the stairs. The pull cord light switch in the bathroom, the memory that will always be associated with it – of the girl who lived in the village and who lost a tooth pulling a light switch like it. The sounds curving round from the pub car park because the side windows aren’t double glazed, always seeming closer then they are and faintly threatening. They’re all gone, replaced by new sounds that are unfamiliar and that are yet to be placed or accustomed to. There are smells, some new and some that cause memories to sharply swim into focus. I think it’s the tobacco, it reminds me of my first student house. The whole house now hovers at the back of my mind when i become aware of the smell. The long hallway, the steep stairs and they’re always being someone home. “

Omars blog entry made me kinda sad that I had forgotten so quickly; I must  make a point of stopping and taking in all the everyday things that I so obviously take for granted……..now that I am retired!

4 a.m.

Its 4 a.m. ..we move today… I have been awake since 2… cleaned the oven (which we are leaving), packed yet another box..

…….how do I feel? Ok actually tired but Ok…this is a positive move there is a whole big beautiful world out there… its people not places that matter… at what point do places: villages, houses, homes become so important to us?

It may be a while before I am able to blog (is this a verb?) again! We are moving in with a friend.. our new apartment not yet released……14th Sept. our backstop date…

……..is there a difference between an apartment and a flat?…..who knows?

Omar looked for cheap flights to Mauritius today.. not a hope… £850….they’re having a laugh…still; only 6 months….and counting………….

5 days and counting

Hello world! I feel kind of nervous this is my first blog and it is to be my retirement blog! Friday 13th of July is due to be my last day at work! Not sure if thats a good omen or what. At the grand old age of 53 I am giving up the world of work! Its also kind of strange that I’m not sure what sort of voice you write a blog in! I will have to do some research before Friday when this blog will start to record my new life. How exciting is that!!
